Bringing things to people

"the civilization that had mistaken the functions of the system, and had used it for bringing people to things, instead of for bringing things to people. Those funny old days, when men went for change of air instead of changing the air in their rooms!" (The Machine Stops, p. 8)

What do you think about this statement? Do we passively let life come to us because of technology?

  1. Our technology is evolving towards people being more and more unnecessary. When we travel, we will often end up in a charter paradise with all-inclusive bars at the pool and restaurants in the near vicinity of the hotel. If we want to go anywhere special, instead of going by foot or bicycle, we wil instead use the tourist busses with all the other sheep guided by the tourist shepherd. Information is googled instantly, which obliterates the need for actually learning/knowing. We can, if we want to, live our lives at one place, home, looking at breathtaking sigths through the 3-d television and getting the daily meals delivered at the doorstep with the click of a mouse. Human contact can also be had through the computer with applications such as videochat wich has live picture feed or just by texting/chatting.
