3) The iceberg-theory

The iceberg-theory is a term used to describe the writing style of Ernest Hemingway. The theory is about how Hemingway seems to write an easy reading novel, but when you look under the surface "of the iceberg" you find a whole other and deeper meaning in the story.

For instance in the story "White Elephant" you read about two people having a conversation. At first you don't really understand what they are talking about, but then if you are "smart-guy-girl" you find out that they are talking about an abortion. That gives the story another meaning which makes it interesting. But it can also be hard to understand if you don't get the real meaning.
